Montreal singer-songwriter Libby Ember returns with “News at the Party,” an energetic yet emotionally raw indie-pop single that captures the quiet devastation of heartbreak in real time. Upbeat and instrumentally rich while lyrically candid, the track explores the dissonance of receiving life-changing news in a room full of people.
Inspired by a personal moment, the song recounts the night Ember discovered someone she cared about had started seeing someone else. “For the rest of the night, I had to pretend I was okay,” she recalls. “But the second I was alone, all I could do was start crying.”
While the initial idea came to her that very night, the song’s evolution stretches far beyond that moment. The full-band recording brings together jazz guitarist Baron Tymas and drummer Thomas Sauvé-Lafrance, creating a layered soundscape where flute, piano, guitar, and drums mirror the emotional overwhelm at the song’s core.
What makes “News at the Party” unique is its contrast: Ember’s lyrics are heartbreakingly honest, yet the upbeat momentum disguises the sadness, reflecting the universal experience of hurting while surrounded by celebration. “I’m drawn to songs that feel like they have a hidden meaning,” she says. “The sad lyrics get masked by the upbeat instrumentals, which feel true to real life.”
Energetic yet dramatic, the single showcases Ember’s skill in turning personal vulnerability into something both communal and cathartic. “I feel proud of myself for having expressed those emotions,” she reflects. “Now I have a song and a memory.”
At 20 years old, Libby Ember is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter studying music at Concordia University. A self-described artist for the “yearners,” she blends indie-folk honesty with dream-pop textures.
After a breakout 2025, Libby Ember is moving from a local secret to an internationally recognized voice in indie-pop.
