Musical collective Brooklyn Funk Essentials shares the new title track off their upcoming album. Following in the footsteps of previous singles, "Black Butterfly" is a cumulative single that transcends genres, much like the band. Brooklyn Funk Essentials is a mass of poets, singers, DJs, and musicians that shape and fit themselves into this group. Founded back in the early 1990s by producers Arthur Baker and Lati Kronlund, the group has continued to reinvent itself with each record.
Alison Limerick remains the lead vocalist alongside long-time member Desmond Foster, who also plays guitar. Hux Nettermalm is on drums with Kronlund on bass and Kristoffer Wallman behind the keyboards. Leading the horns is trombone talent Ebba Åsman. Together, the group turns clubs and shows into all-out sing-alongs.
"Black Butterfly" is the group's latest single that manages to capture the essence of music, or what it used to be. Using alt R&B with smooth jazz makes for a perfect night out. The music speaks to anyone whose a fan of great music. No matter the age, Brooklyn Funk Essentials manages to shred society's labels in a perfect way.
Kronlund explains, ‘The song that would become ‘Black Butterfly’ started as the soundtrack of a dream. In the dream, I was trying to find my way in an unknown and barren landscape. I woke up, and the song was still playing in my head…It was a ballad – not a funky song, but I thought I would see what BFE could do with it, since we were about to start recording a new album…"
"Black Butterfly" is just one single in a long line of releases, leading to their next album. The new single provides a glimpse into the making of the new album and a sense of where the group's music will take influences from. The new album is set to be released later this year on Dorado Records.
