Returning with their latest EP, "colour wheel," Cigarettes for Breakfast have blessed us with a shoegaze and dream pop exploration that embodies the essence of bedroom psych-pop experimentation. Matt Whiteford has made a name for himself by undertaking this. Their follow-up to 2025 LP "Slow Motion," this seven-track offering is a labor of love, taking over three years to complete across eight audio and visual narratives.
The EP kicks off with "colour wheel" and "flowing," examples of how the band puts interplay between dreamy textures and chugging rhythms at its center, welcoming fans into a kaleidoscopic sound experience. It was recorded, performed, and mixed by Whiteford himself at The Hatch Studio in Philadelphia, PA, an EP with all the raw intimacy of a true bedroom project. Drummer Anthony Rossi adds an impressive flourish on "daylight savings," introducing a subtle rhythmic complexity to the EP's layers.
At just 20 minutes long, "colour wheel" is nevertheless a fully-formed experience, merging melodies and textured instrumentation that hearken to the inventive impulse of early shoegaze forebears while still sounding fresh and contemporary. It's the kind of record that pays off with each spin, with each turn uncovering fresh details and musical surprises. "colour wheel" is a masterclass in musical experimentation and storytelling. The invitation is to lose yourself in a swirl of colors, textures, and idioms that seem both referential and futuristic.
