Ambient singer-songwriter Mokotow draws us into his immersive sonic world with Tales From Lonely Mountain, weaving gentle companionable spirit with quiet rushes of joy across a layered instrumental exploration.
First sparking to life in February 2010, in an attic studio that had just received its floor, the project was born from Mike Mokotow’s meditative escape into hours of spontaneous creation from which the track “From Above.” Written and recorded on the same day, the track documents a muted but precious sense of inexplicable jubilation, channelling cartharsis and confidence in equal parts. Every song after this followed a similar approach, whether the tender turns into the past and time passing by on “Memory Lane Lullaby,” or the deep warmth of “Midnight Mass,” which thrums with an authentic, atmospheric feel encapsulating sultry summer nights in the alluring instrumentals. Meanwhile, “Carousel Blues” taps into a hypnotic rhythms and looping progression signalling messages of return underscored by a haunting yet hopeful note that lingers throughout the production.
Floating through seasons, solitude and a sense of restraint, this is a collection that feels preserved and precious over produced and polished. With authenticity, nostalgia and genuine simplicity shaping each note, Tales From Lonely Mountain is a vivid glimpse into the intricate craft of an artist shaped by lineage, defiance and sharp clarity ; with a companion art exhibition opening March 21 at The Roscoe Collective (Catskills) showcasing the film visuals for “Carousel Blues."
Speaking of the album, Mokotow says, “I hope it becomes a companion – the way it has been for me for years. Something you return to while reading, during the first snowfall or a season’s change. I hope it gives people permission to slow down. To sit with something without needing it to resolve. There’s strength in restraint – and a quiet power in being at ease with stillness. And if it connects emotionally, in our shared experience of this complex thing called life, that’s a relief for me. It means the voice captured here was true- and that it can continue finding its way to you.”
Born into a family of musicians who fled Cold War–torn Poland, Mokotow is an artist defined by his resilience rooted in seamless transitions through worlds, times and soundscapes. First emerging as frontman of Butchers of Sky Valley, a blues-rock outfit, Mokotow’s work extends beyond albums into visual media as a composer for film as well.
Offering up music made for moments of reflection and peacer, Mokotow continues to trace what we carry, what lingers, and what we leave behind through the echoes of his minimalist yet delicate artistry.
