Lopez Island & Brighton synth-pop duo Disaster Fantasy blends a vintage new wave sensibility and a brooding, dystopian vibe on “The Hourglass,” the title track of their forthcoming EP.
Plunging into the darker edges of their musicality, the track layers pulsing electronic instrumentals, insistent beats and swelling psychedelic synths with textured vocals for an atmospheric lofi style. A slow-built anthem that intensifies with depth and tension into an powerful finishing note, the track is a glimpse at the upcoming EP, a conceptually-driven collection that brims with mystic in every note.
Speaking of the project, lead singer Ryann says, "'The Hourglass' is a whole world. The stories in the songs are told from the perspective of characters who have some connection to a fictional bar in Los Angeles called The Hourglass. We're huge Lynch fans, and The Hourglass could easily be compared to One Eyed Jack's from Twin Peaks or Silencio from Mulholland Drive- bad things happen there; it's mysterious and crooked, and there's maybe even some esoteric, metaphysical force under the surface."
Metaphoric yet straight forward in its exploration of the relatable fear of time running out, the project is resonant and intimate in equal melodic turns. Ryann, adds, "Every character is these songs has an anxious relationship to time. In reality, this was something I was dealing with in the writing of the words and melodies for these songs. Byron and I often have limited time in which to write and record and it ended up coming through thematically."
A collaboration between vocalist Ryann Donnelly and multi-instrumentalist Byron Kalet, Disaster Fantasy who have already established themselves with their distinctive blend of disco, alternative-pop and experimental flair continue to carry their creative momentum forward, weaving melancholic synth-led tales that leaves us wanting more.
