Japan-hailing dance and vocal group KID PHENOMENON are all set to take the stage at at SXSW 2026. Held annually every March in Austin, SXSW has become a globally renowned event spanning music, film, technology, and culture, SXSW 2026 is set take place from March 12 to March 18 this year.
Considered one of the world’s largest convergence conferences and festivals SXSW which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year as always stood as a space for finding the stars that take music to greater heights, and with their presence as one of the few artists selected from Japan, KID PHENOMENON are setting a new standard for what to expect from Tokyo's music scene.
Rooted in a signature "Tokyo Neo Pop" sound, the septet who debuted in 2023 have steadily carved out a space for themselves, drawing intrigue for their unique performance style.
With SXSW's unfailing reputation as a major gateway for artists before their global breakthroughs, this is an opportunity for KID PHENOMENON to spark a new global phenomenon from Tokyo and establish themselves on the world stage.
In conversation with Earmilk, the band chat about what to expect from their SXSW 2026 performance, career highlights and future goals.
- Take me through your feelings on performing at SXSW 2026? Any hints on what fans can expect from it?
KENSUKE: I feel truly honoured to be performing at SXSW. It will also be our first time performing in the United States, so I’m incredibly excited. Drawing on all the experience we’ve gained from our previous live shows, we’ve created a performance that anyone can enjoy. We’ve prepared plenty of special arrangements and dance tracks just for this show, so I hope everyone looks forward to it.
SHUNNNOSUKE: I’m extremely excited. Expanding globally has been one of our goals since our debut, so being able to perform at SXSW feels like a major step forward for us. We love taking on new challenges, and I hope everyone will look forward to the unique atmosphere, music, and performance that the seven of us create together.
- How would you describe your sound and how do you hope for it to evolve going forward?
TSUBASA: As we deliver music across a wide range of genres, we want to show respect to many different cultures and, through KID PHENOMENON’s unique colour, transcend language barriers to share our music with the world.
KOTA: Since our group has members who specialise in various genres, we take on all kinds of styles without limiting ourselves to just one. Moving forward, we hope to make the most of each member’s individuality and express it across many different fields.
- SXSW 2026 is obviously a huge career highlight but what else would you call a surreal moment in your journey so far?
SOMA: It was the stadium stage at LDH LIVE-EXPO 2024 -EXILE TRIBE BEST HITS- held in 2024. Standing in a stadium, a place every artist dreams of performing in at least once, in only our second year since our debut, was truly a dream come true. The sight of the crowd filling my entire view and the thunderous cheers that felt like they were shaking the ground were beyond anything I could put into words. That overwhelming scale and intensity left a deep impression on me. Being able to share joy and excitement through music with tens of thousands of people in such a huge venue was incredibly moving. At the same time, I made a strong promise to myself that one day we will return to that stage for our own solo concert.
- Is there a certain amount of pressure that comes with performing on such a global level stage? How do you overcome such moments of creative pressure?
TSUBASA: I don’t feel pressure. Instead, I’m more driven by curiosity and excitement about how people will react. That anticipation turns into positive energy, which pushes me to give even more power to my performance.
KOTA: Of course, I feel pressure! SXSW 2026 will be our first time performing in the United States. Performing in America — such a major music hub — requires a high level of skill. There’s also the language barrier, so it’s definitely a challenging experience. But we built this performance by supporting and helping one another as members.
- What’s your favourite part of performing live other than of course getting to engage with fans?
KOHAKU: My favourite part is definitely the dance track. I’ve been dancing for most of my life, so performances where I can fully showcase my strongest skill — dance — really fire me up, and I genuinely enjoy performing them. As a group, one of our strengths is that every member is a strong dancer, and those sections often become standout highlights in our live shows.
RUI: My favourite moment is our entrance. We carefully consider what kind of production will surprise the audience or make them say, “That’s cool,” so hearing their cheers in response is really rewarding. The opening momentum of a live show is crucial, so we always put a lot of thought into it.
- What’s on your bucket list for the future in terms of festivals or venues to perform at?
SHUNNOSUKE: It’s my dream to perform at Coachella!
KENSUKE: Our goal is to perform all around the world, so we’d love to appear at festivals in many different countries. Since our debut, performing at Coachella has been one of our major goals, and it’s definitely a stage I’d love to stand on one day.
