Singer-songwriter Mitch Allen is back with a new release filled with soul and folk jazz. "Love That For You," Allen's new single, is full of what makes his music such an inviting space for weary travelers. The lyrics are sharp and sung with such focus that the melody tends to get lost among the wordplay. Following his 2022 debut album, So Soft, Allen hasn't released new music until his January 2026 single, "Pictures of Love."
"Love That For You" marks the second single since Allen's return to music, and it seems time has only honed his skills. The core foundation of the single is soul and jazz influences that have been central to Allen's past work.
Allen spoke about the process coming back, "This song was written like many others, just through the melodies first… I've always been attracted to bluesy/jazzy stuff and haven't really written in that register before, so sitting at my Roland FP-9, which I've had for many years, I just started knocking things out to see where it went."
"I wrote this with the intent of creating something truly character-based, but taking the side of the person I wouldn't readily identify with. I think there's a real release in finding yourself in someone whose brain you wouldn't normally inhabit, finding ways both to inhabit their point of view and also being objective enough to let them be seen honestly through the writing."
With such a character-driven single, it's no wonder Allen took the approach of fusing certain metrics to craft a beautiful sound. With mixing done by Sam Gleason, the sound remains high in production. Social themes like wealth and social classes, the single is sure to draw discussion. The singer manages to pick up right where he left off in 2022. The melodies and sonic production complement each other well in the grand scheme of things.
Reading into the recent releases, Allen seems to be gearing up to release a second album later this year. The first two singles released so far paint a path that Allen can masterfully walk.
