Multi-instrumentalist MatAre takes us on a 13-minute journey through "Brevity," an EP that combines past sounds with new ones in the most thoughtful, yet modern, way possible. Consisting of 4 crafted tracks, they offer an intimate glimpse of MatAre's musical breadth and outlook.
MatAre stretched it out with instruments including the Stingray bass guitar and the Fender Jaguar, which he recorded at his home studio in Sarasota. The rhythm section, aided by drummer Glen Welman, adds a bit more depth and movement to the songs, keeping the light melodies and diaphanous synth layers grounded.
Opening the EP is "Brevity," a title track that establishes the tone with its short but emotionally layered orchestration. It goes to show just how quickly the MatAre project achieves complex instrumental textures. Next is "When Alone," a reflective, atmospheric song that lingers long. "Do You Think They're Going to Talk About Us?" has a bittersweet, story-driven energy, and "When The Sun Falls" offers a big, cinematic farewell to the EP.
What's remarkable about "Brevity" is MatAre's ability to create an EP that feels much larger than its totality. Every song is meticulously assembled, highlighting his abilities as a writer, producer, and performer. The combination of instruments and contemporary production techniques creates a sound that's both organic and futuristic.
"Brevity" is such a surefire way to showcase MatAre's art, and this is a perfect entry point for new listeners. This is the kind of EP that's going to be great listening for people who enjoy music that makes the heart feel things.
