Irish folk-rock duo Basciville have released their latest single, “Saintmaking”.
A gentle and emotive track off their upcoming second album Love In The Time Of The State (out March 13 via Faction Records), “Saintmaking” is a deeply reflective track that sees the brother duo confronting some of their own worst instincts.
“Saintmaking is about calling yourself out on your shit and giving something an honest go,” says the duo. “In a lot of ways, we’re wired to look over our shoulder at what’s potentially passing us by because of where we’ve planted ourselves. The song was born out of a feeling of wanting to let go of that pull, and to focus on what’s gained rather than what’s lost.”
The track is beautifully lush with soaring vocals, chromatic scales, and some interesting math-rock-esque timings at certain points, and takes what would have been a potentially simple to more interesting heights. The vocals’ rich, soulful tone is particularly captivating, which only heightens the sharpness of the lyrics: “tell yourself don’t be so proud/I know it’s just the nothing sound/repeating in your head”. It’s a song about the feeling of being stuck, and wanting to be rid of the cycle of it – to move on and let go.
The album promises to be more of the same, and has been said to feature tracks about socio-political disillusionment, existential weariness, and an enduring love that continues despite challenges it faces – all wrapped up in notes of late-90s Radiohead, the essence of Nirvana, and the stylings of Jeff Buckley.
