Powerhouse rapper JOOHONEY of global K-pop sensation MONSTA X further shapes his solo musical journey with his latest mini album 光 (INSANITY), a punchy collection showcasing his artistic versatility and evolution.
With JOOHONEY contributing to writing and composing every song on the album, the project strikes a balance between the impulsive passion of youth and the intricate responsibilities of an  established artist as he delivers an intimate reflection of his journey so far laden with emotional delicacy and fierce energy all in one.
Led by the anthemic title track “STING (Feat. Muhammad Ali)”, JOOHONEY confronts pain head-on interwoven with a sharp messaging and bold delivery before the other six tracks span everything from fear and anxiety nestled within to the empowering, limitless determination that pushes forward. An impactful seven-track collection establishes JOOHONEY's consistently elevated musical path as he unveils growth with each new chapter.

Speaking to Earmilk, he dives into the message and process behind his new mini album, sounds he'd like to experiment with as a solo artist and career highlights.

What is the inspiration/message behind your newest album?

JOOHONEY: My second mini-album, 〈光 (INSANITY)〉, was inspired by the point where madness and light coexist, that moment when raw emotion and instinct collide. I wanted to express the idea that by facing pain, confusion, and chaos head-on, you can eventually find your own light. Each track reflects a different stage of that process, moving through fear, desire, and struggle, and gradually toward self-discovery. It’s a very honest journey, and I hope listeners can recognize pieces of their own emotions in it as they move through the album with me.

This album also expands on the universe I introduced with my first mini-album, 〈LIGHTS〉, which carried the message, “the darker the darkness, the stronger the light.” With 〈光 (INSANITY)〉, that idea naturally deepened into something more complex. I realized that sometimes, in order to truly shine, you have to embrace a bit of madness as well. The project started from a simple question: how do people find strength and light in a dark world? As I’ve grown, both as a person and as an artist — that question has continued to evolve, and this album is a reflection of that growth.

How would you say sound has evolved over time and where do you see it going from here?

JOOHONEY: I think my sound has evolved rather than changed. As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to trying different things sonically, and with this project especially, I paid a lot of attention to the details, particularly mixing. I wanted every layer to feel intentional and honest. When it comes to where it’s going next, I don’t try to force a direction. I believe that if I keep expressing what feels true to me such as following my instincts and my heart, the expansion happens naturally. That process of evolution is something I share with the people who listen to my music. As I grow and explore, I hope they can feel that journey with me, wherever it leads.

What's your personal favourite track off this project?

JOOHONEY: The track I feel most emotionally connected to on this project is “NO BRAIN NO PAIN.” It reminds me of MONSTA X songs like “Stand Up” and “Love Forever,” as well as my solo track “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” While people often associate me with intense or powerful music, warmth and sincerity have always been an important part of who I am as an artist. This song blends emotional comfort with refreshing rock elements, and its message, letting go of overthinking and hesitation, really reflects where I am mentally right now. It was inspired by my time in the military, and by the idea of simply moving forward without holding yourself back. “Just do it, just go” is something I truly live by, and it’s even tattooed on my body. I hope this song can become something comforting and empowering — not just for me, but for MONBEBE as well.

As a soloist what genres or concepts would you like to experiment with in future?

JOOHONEY: As a solo artist, there are so many genres and concepts I want to explore. Right now, I’m building the LIGHT universe in my music. For the first chapter, I showed a more serious, introspective side of myself. With the second, 光 (INSANITY), I wanted to reveal a powerful, intense presence on stage. And for the next chapter, I hope to show the fun, playful, and bright side of me; the side that’s energetic and full of joy. In terms of genres, I’m excited to dive into areas I haven’t explored before, like new jack swing, shuffle, and soul. Styles I haven’t fully explored yet. It’s all part of continuing to grow, experiment, and share different sides of myself with the people who’ve been supporting me along the way.

For you what’s the most rewarding part of the music making experience?

JOOHONEY: The most rewarding part of making music for me is being able to express the different sides of who I am. It gives me a space where I can be honest with my emotions, without filtering or holding back. At the same time, creating something that can resonate with others is incredibly meaningful. When I realize that my music can comfort someone, inspire them, or make them feel less alone, it reminds me why I started in the first place. That connection, even if it’s with just one person, is what makes the entire process truly rewarding.

What’s been a career highlight for you? What’s on your bucket list?

JOOHONEY: One of the biggest highlights of my career has been finding my own identity as a solo artist while continuing to grow together with MONSTA X. Being able to stand on my own musically, without losing the foundation and history we’ve built as a group, has been incredibly meaningful to me. With 〈光 (INSANITY)〉, I was able to show a fuller spectrum of who I am that I’m not just as a rapper or vocalist, but also as a producer and creative director. Being involved in every step of the process made this project especially significant, because it truly reflects where I am right now as an artist. Looking ahead, my bucket list isn’t about reaching a single destination. I want to keep challenging myself creatively, explore new musical territories, and collaborate with artists I genuinely admire. More than anything, I hope to meet fans around the world through international festivals and, eventually, a global tour; and continue sharing this journey with them, one stage at a time.

In three words how would you describe your artistry to someone who may not have heard it before?

JOOHONEY: If I had to describe my artistry in three words, I’d say it’s expressive, instinctive, and genuine. I also hope it shows that there’s really nothing I can’t try, that I’m willing to explore, experiment, and push boundaries.
