Teedra Moses Is Reimagining Complex Simplicity and Entering Her Grown Woman Realness Era [Interview]

With over two decades in the industry and amidst her second wind within her career, Teedra Moses' explanation for her evolution is simple as this: "I'm grown… When I say grown, I'm not talking about a sound. I'm talking about context."

In almost every aspect, her answer in our exclusive EARMILK interview holds weight. She's comfortable in her own skin, sound, and direction. When she introduced herself with her debut album Complex Simplicity, the New Orleans-born singer first graced the scene as a coming-of-age artist. Given the LP's critical acclaim and cult classic status with fans, Teedra details commemorating the album with a re-release as being rewarding as it has been stressful. "People are really serious about Complex Simplicity", Teedra explains. "When you get around to have a relationship with someone for 20 years or so, you have to consider them."

It's the reason that the anniversary project serves as more than just a celebration for her, but a chance to revisit the conversation with fans that only caught fragments of her initial impact. The 8-song tracklist serves as an invitation for the audience to consume the album as not just a frozen moment in time, but as a living body of work backed by newly-added features like Durand Bernarr and Estelle breathing new life into the cuts. She even takes new direction in some of her production choices as well with tracks like "Rescue Me". The anniversary album also gives her a chance to revive the feeling that the chapter of her life brings while being able to fully bring it to a close.

"I'm having to understand really where I was. People talk about how this album sounds so pretty and things like. But if you listen to the context, that's a hurt person, you know, writing these songs."

Fast forward to today, the vocalist is back on the scene by popular demand without missing a beat. Over the past year, fans have been watching Teedra grace the scene with multiple stellar performances on COLORS, NPR Tiny Desk, Cadillac Chronicles, and more. Her vocals have always been a standout, but her presence on each platform displays an undeniable, captivating glow that steals the show every time. While some could say it's a result of ever-present confidence, the glow is merely a reflection of Teedra's comfortability within her own skin. She wears her growth unapologetically and speaks from a place of certainty, anchored by the type of self-assurance that's only rewarded by time and experience.

What we've been bearing witness to is the singer in her Grown Woman Realness era, which is a perfect title for the forthcoming album she currently has in the works. While details on the project are still scarce, she was able to give us the exclusive on her first full-length in a decade.

"My perspective is just grown. I just want to tell people, don't let them bamboozle you out of growth. Getting older is a beautiful thing; I'm sure and 100% non-doubtful. I'm very clear on who I am, what I am, how I affect people, and understanding my power… The lyrics, themes, and song ideas… [I'm] trying to reach people who are in a certain level of maturity or move past some stuff."

Twenty years into her career and amidst a new stage of reinvention, Teedra Moses is not setting herself up for a victory lap at this point in time; this is clearly her reintroduction.
