Milk & Bone have released their Chromeo-produced EP A Little Lucky.
Made up of Canadian duo Camille Poliquin and Laurence Lafond-Beaulne, A Little Lucky was largely written over the course of four days alongside fellow Canadian duo Chromeo, who dealt with the EP’s production.
After a fortuitous meeting of the minds, Milk & Bone got Chromeo on board after winning ‘Electronic Album of the Year’ at the Juno Awards in 2019, resulting in a perfectly matched group project.
Featuring the already-released singles “Hoops” and “Bloodshot”, the four-track EP is an exercise in rich synths, catchy basswork, and soaring vocal harmonies, while at the same time being an intense look at the pain of reality and isolation. It’s a treat for the senses, and one that Milk & Bone were more than happy to discuss the creation of with EarMilk.
You worked really closely with Chromeo for the new EP–what was that like? You seem like a match made in heaven.
It felt that way, yes. Probably because we all come from the same city, Montreal, we have lots in common.
References, memories, stupid expressions, slang… It felt like we were hanging out with our big brothers. We had so much fun creating those songs with them.
It was also really nice to see another duo dynamic and notice all the similarities we share.
You’ve said “Hoops” is about wanting to be seen by another person – what inspired this?
Obsession and limerence, of course!
Hoops is the push and pull of wanting a person so bad but not being able to put yourself out there, to let them know how you feel. It’s as much about being stuck in the house (this was written during a gLoBaL pAnDeMiC) as being stuck in your head, in your heart.
Going crazy over feelings that you don’t know where to store. So they just end up bubbling to the surface and making you a little insane.
You talked about being inspired by Robyn on the new track–what does her style mean to you?
One of the things we love about Robyn is just how deep and dark and real her lyrics can be, but the beat is always UP and bright, and you ALWAYS want to dance.
There’s something about Scandinavian artists that matches our Canadian energy very well. Is it because we’re extremely cold half of the year and tend to get seasonal depression and have to make bops to stay sane? Maybe.
Anyway, I remember when Call Your Girlfriend was released and feeling like I’d never heard lyrics so raw and real over a beat so pop. And we feel like this is something we do as well. We’ve never shied away from being forward about what we want and need to say.
You won Electronic Album of the Year in 2019–what was that like?
Well, honestly, it was the biggest surprise. That was our main reaction. But then came a lot of pride and feeling lucky to be seen in this immense pool of talented artists.
We had and still are working so hard every day to make music that is authentic–holding the creative reins on everything. Being recognized for all of the hard work put in was really special.
How has that affected your career over the last few years?
We actually met Chromeo that night, so there’s that! Without this night happening, this new EP might have never seen the light. We toured so much that year, people showed up, it was such an intense and demanding year, but so exciting too.
Are there any genres you want to try your hand at?
We already allow ourselves a lot of liberty in terms of where we go musically. We never really think about genres, but do love to explore different sonics, lyrical themes, production styles, and vocal productions.
Without the categorization of genres, we do like to explore, but we’ll just always go with what feels right for us at that moment.
What's next after the EP comes out?
Now that the EP is all done, we're working on so many things!
Creating cute merch items (we’re obsessed with it), starting to put the new live show together, working on new songs already.
We are also setting up little listening sessions in Montreal and NY + starting to plan tour dates for 2026!
