Toronto indie-rockers Good Kid have released their new single, “Rift.”
Their latest single since “Wall” took off and went viral with one million streams (and counting), Good Kid have made a name for themselves with their “counterintuitive” strategy of giving their music away in order to continue making their art independently. Having made their entire discography both Content ID-free and DCMA-free, streamers and creators alike are free to use any and all music of theirs on any platform they want. Good Kid are interested in community, and it’s a great strategy to win them the legions of fans they deserve.
Based on the experience of reaching the breaking point of a toxic relationship, “Rift” features the lyrics “I lived a life before you/you and I, nothing comes easy/nothing comes easy”, encapsulating the deeply human experience of trying to hold onto something that isn’t worth the effort, and already has one foot out the door.
Bursting with frenetic math rock-esque energy and wonderfully clear vocals, “Rift” is a cymbal crashing, angry toe-tapping jewel of a track, cementing Good Kid’s status as “the biggest band you’ve never heard of” – and if you have, you can rest assured that your personal taste is absolutely stellar.
