Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Lara Villani encapsulates heartbreak and empowerment in equal parts in her latest music video “Second Chances,” a track which hones in on her vibrant yet emotive musicality which stretches throughout her latest EP whiplash, a five-track collection that journeys through love, growth and finding yourself with both gentle reflection and raw honesty.
Laden with energy and confidence, “Second Chances,” is the perfect encapsulation of the EP’s core message of self-discovery as it captures the freedom of finally choosing yourself. The accompanying video echoes this uplifting and liberating message with vividness underpinned by tender simplicity.
Shot inside a working laundromat in Northcote, Melbourne, the visuals transformed an ordinary daily life setting into a thoughtful metaphor for emotional cleansing. Swaying between hope and catharsis, the visuals encapsulate the boldness and freedom of stepping away and ridding ourselves of the weight of messy love and finding that same love within yourself.
Speaking of the visuals, Villani says, “It was created with a small team, directed by Louise McKnoulty and filmed & edited by me. It really gave us the opportunity to feel into the clip and be quite free with it. The video showcases that feeling when you're waiting for someone to show up (physically or metaphorically) only to be disappointed, until you then realise, you don't need them anyway – boy bye!”
With a vintage touch that matches Villani’s soulful yet lush sonic style, “Second Chance” makes for a self-assured yet vulnerable look at self-love, leading us into a tale that feels intimate and resonant all at once.
The track is an enticing and ethereal encapsulation of the full EP, which weaves a mix of precise pop, smooth R&B and gritty rock. With her grounding yet cinematic storytelling at the centre of her expansive soundscape, Lara Villani leads us through love, loss, and rediscovering her own power with effortless finesse.
