The polished presence of the virtual world collides with the raw but artistic touch of humanity to bring us K-pop virtual idol group PLAVE. A self-producing quintet – consisting of members Yejun, Noah, Bamby, Eunho, and Hamin – PLAVE is the representation of what it means to create music in the digital era.
They might exist virtually but PLAVE’s craft is profoundly real, with each member contributing to creation of their music. Involved in every step including writing, composing, production and choreography, PLAVE is the encapsulation of a vivid creative space where imagination and reality not only coexist but flourish.
Making use of 3D modeling and motion capture, PLAVE have established an otherworldly yet tangible presence with their live performances and interactive streams led by webtoon-inspired visuals and story-driven artistry.
Managing to build an emotional connect with fans that transcends physical form, the band who already made history as the first virtual group to chart on the Billboard Global 200 with their third EP, Caligo Pt. 1, continue to keep up momentum with their new single album PLBBUU, a three-track release that pays forward a sense of gratitude to their fandom PLLI. Spanning title track, “BBUU!,” “숨바꼭질 (Hide and Seek),” and “봉숭아 (Bongsoong-a),” the project is showcase of their signature playful experimentation, incorporating a nostalgic hide-and-seek theme alongside a collaboration with Sanrio characters.
Speaking of the essence of their craft, PLAVE shares, “We have a song called Our Movie. I think it captures PLAVE’s musical world perfectly. In the beginning, we didn’t have many opportunities – so much of what we dreamed of existed only as vague possibilities. Back then, we talked about this:
‘What if we create our own movie, where we’re the protagonists? Let’s tell a story that only we can tell.’”
Since their 2023 debut with Asterum, the five-piece have established a genre-spanning music which sways from rock and R&B to ballads and pop all rooted in a sense of versatility and innovation. Imaginative and futuristic yet deeply human, PLAVE stand out as a pinnacle of musical evolution, offering us a reminder that the digital era can enhance rather than replace the authentically human expression of music.
With an ever-expanding discography and their ongoing Asian tour, DASH: Quantum Leap, set to culminate in encore shows at Seoul Gocheok Dome on November 21 and 22, PLAVE are marking a new era of music in K-pop and beyond, breaking the barriers of physicality, genre and more as they continue to entice the world with their unique presence – shaping a layered sonic tale only they can tell.
