The Muster Point Project's "Old is New" is a vibrant, emotive 13-song album that gently blends indie rock with elements of Americana, folk, alt-country, and Pop. In each song, TMPP offers up an accurate and candid look at the relationships we build, romantic or otherwise, in their tumultuous, tender, and imperfect forms.
Mixed and produced by Darryll McFadyen, "Old is New" features a world-class band of studio luminaries, including Marcelo Effori, Oleg Pisarenko, Per Löfdahl, and Sterling Laws, along with one-time associate Geoff Moore, the author. Together, they help further TMPP's mission of maintaining the indie spirit of rock and roll, as well as defining what that sound is.
The tracks include "Alone Again," a folk-rock ballad ruminating on betrayal and loneliness after a heist gone wrong. At the same time, "I Can Only Cry" is an amusing recasting of the standard country heartbreak song. "Stuck in Transit" tells a classic rock story of humor and redemption, and "UR 2 GUD" explores the theme of love between two people who think they are not good enough for each other.
Notable highlights include "Believe in Yourself," which features a rocking mid-song daydream harking back to rock 'n' roll's golden era, and "Brand New Day," a spirited pop-rock anthem about turning life's obstacles into a celebration of being human. "Looked Good on Paper" is a standout and reflective indie rock gem, showcasing both ups and downs.
From the indie-folk introspection of "Forgotify" to the punk-struck fervour in "Darlin'." "Old is New" implies that music is not so much about sounds, but stories, soul, and substance. Every song offers a glimpse into TMPP's world as relatable, poignant, and unapologetic in its exploration of the beautiful chaos of humanity. With "Old is New," The Muster Point Project has added an album to its discography that feels like home, welcoming, introspective, and vividly alive.
