Jenny Kern faces the pain of letting go on “bones”

Need a track to pair with a heartache so heavy it’s hard to think about letting go—even though, deep down, you know you have to?

Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jenny Kern has you covered with her new single, “bones.”

From its aching lead melody to its painstakingly honest lyrics, “bones” is heartbreak distilled—raw, relatable, and hauntingly human. Kern perfectly articulates the emotional paralysis that comes from feeling too much and saying too little.

The song opens with a delicate twinkle before grounding itself in acoustic guitar, setting the stage for lyrics that capture the pain of heartbreak—the knowing you need to let go, but not wanting to.

On the making of “bones,” Kern shares: “I wrote ‘bones’ while trying to let go of the love of my life — it’s an emotive, self-produced indie-folk track with moody synths, shimmering guitars, and an unforgettable chorus.”

Kern’s right—the chorus is unforgettable. It’s gut-wrenchingly reflective:

“Cause I loved her to the moon back again, I want to believe she gave all that I could ask, but it’s cutting right down to my bones, so don’t tell me it’s easy to let somebody go.”

While Kern has a gift for emphasizing the right words within a melody, it’s her lyrics that truly shine on “bones.”

Kern draws listeners in, urging them to pay close attention to what’s being said, a skill that few songwriters genuinely master.

The surrounding sonic elements provide a steady foundation, allowing her words to take center stage. It’s a track that pulls you in completely—and you won’t be sorry you stayed to listen.
