Natanya is a musician who can transcend time, she takes semblance of the 90s while pushing forward a futuristic sound. Very reminiscent of the lates 90s/early 2000s futurism style of R&B, Natanya is an artists that invokes intimacy but still embraces secrecy. She is an artist who can borrow from the past but leap us forward into the present. Inspired by Motown singers and 80s funk, she combines the deep Blues of the past with her innovative and whimsical vocals. Her precise but adventurous production provides the landscape to explore the questions of time.
The song starts with mid-tempo drums, that makes you feel like you’re walking with the pace of the beat. It feels very groovy yet burnish. You then are immersed as a guest in a conversation that Natanya is having with “Jezebel.” In contemporary culture, a jezebel is a stereotypes that frames Black women as hypersexual and promiscuous. Instead of stereotyping the Jezebel, Natanya takes this moment to humanize her. She asks her questions about her dreams, and how she deals with her pain. She tells her to chase her dreams and that she could be a star. Her use of Background vocals fuse into the beat; it feels like someone is whispering in the back of your head. This could be an intentional choice so that the affirmations are programmed in the listeners subconscious. The songs ends off with a Bridge that is indued with affirmations and meant to make you feel confident.
In a world where Black women face immense amounts of violence and are subjected to misogynoir, it’s essential that there’s spaces where Black women can be humanized. Natanya creates a space for this in "Jezebel."
