LA-based art-rock artist Phantom Pink (AKA Brayton Walls) has released his new single, “I’m at the right place at the right time.”
A moody, brooding guitar-led track, “I’m at the right place at the right time” is Phantom Pink’s first release since his 2023 debut EP, A Good Color On You. The single is the first he’s releasing off of his upcoming second album, Gothika, which will see him take a look at his home city of Los Angeles through a gothic, vampiric lens.
Mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Laufey, Beebadoobee), the song is based on the cult classic thriller movie Posession.
According to Phantom Pink himself, the song is about mania. He said: “The anxiety of the guitar riff inspired the song’s walled-in, castle sound. I wanted the lyrics to be mundane – dreadfully mundane. This song exists within homes; the basement, the trophy cabinet, windows, keys, locks”.
The melody really is the star of “I’m at the right place at the right time”, and Phantom Pink’s assessment of his own lyrics is correct; they are indeed mundane, but this is used to good dramatic effect for the song itself. The circular mundanity of the lyrics offsets how moody the rest of the track is, and how the instrumentation drives the song emotionally. The words don’t matter because the mood is right, and the mood is trapped, clawing at the walls, wanting desperately to get out and express emotion more freely.
Hopefully, this teaser for Gothika is proof of more to come.
