Looking for a new band to brag about to your friends before they even catch on? Cue up rising group The Silkies and their new single, “Lies.” It’s a beautifully trippy cocktail of garage, new wave, psych rock, and alternative.
The six-piece—Jake Merritt (drums, production), Pierce Geary (bass, vocals), Joe Pruitt (lead vocals, guitar, synth), Tyler Peyman (guitar), Michael Takahashi (synth), and Johnny Rice (guitar, synth)—draws inspiration from Talking Heads, The Clash, Air, Neu, The Horrors, Devo, Pixies, Television, Sparklehorse, and The Blue Nile.
Together, The Silkies have hit on a formula that just works.
Clocking in at 2 minutes and 55 seconds, “Lies” is compulsive fun—built for moshing, stomping, head-thrashing, or whatever your vibe calls for. The vocals land at the 16-second mark with a punkish punch: part speak-singing, all attitude.
On its meaning, Pruitt explains: “Essentially, the song is about the freedom of living in ignorance and how quickly it can come crashing down on you. Should you continue living in bliss or face life’s ugly truths?”
The echoed vocals in the chorus lean new wave, but the real payoff comes at 2:12, when the track locks into irresistible grooves that demand movement.
All told, “Lies” is an A+ effort—short, sharp, and guaranteed to leave you itching for whatever The Silkies serve up next.
