Brazilian-born and Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist Tutafarel offers up fierce yet delicately hypnotic offering “AMERICAN NIGHTMARE,” channelling a luscious blend of energetic hyper-pop and early 2000s nostalgia.
Seductive, anthemic and euphoric, the dance-floor number captures a powerful escapist spirit with a smooth dose of sensuality. Speaking of the track, he says, “It’s fierce, sexy, and about locking eyes with someone you like. I was deep into 90’s action movies when I wrote it, and I started my own little Letterboxd list with “homosocial action movies” just for fun. I ended up in a Hugh Jackman rabbit hole and rewatched his scene with Iceman in X-Men 2, where he blows on a beer bottle for Wolverine. It’s so campy and perfect. Toward the end of the track, there’s a beer-bottle-opening sound — my little wink to that moment.”
The track is elevated by sleek, sultry visuals that offer a cinematic yet playful representation of the fun and tension of the soundscape. Hazy and dreamy yet brimming with a sense of excitement, the visuals add a fresh layer of charm to the track. On the video, he says, "The video for AMERICAN NIGHTMARE takes place in a trophy-filled locker room thick with haze, a space where competition and intimacy collide. Through two looks, one white and one black, I shift between peace and chaos, echoing the dualities at the core of Monte Casanova: intimacy and betrayal, allure and danger, tenderness and bravado.
“AMERICAN NIGHTMARE,” is an alluring glimpse into upcoming debut album Monte Casanova, a multimedia exploration of escape, survival, and unapologetic identity, which arrives soon, framed by equal parts of chaos and tenderness.
