With his new single “Who Was I?”, Jeremy Parsons takes that introspection and turns it into a song, penning a touching number that feels both independent and universal.
The just under four-minute “Who Was I?” is a confessional diary entry set to music. Parsons returns to life at 25, a phase characterized by drifting, late nights, and purpose-seeking, grappling with society’s expectations. Parsons is not one for pulling punches. Instead, he leans in to it, providing lyrics that will resonate with anyone who has trouble getting over themselves amid the blur of young adulthood.
The Americana vibe of Parsons' roots and innate honesty in both Parsons' music warms the soul with his weathered delivery of melodic tales. There’s a lived-in sincerity to his delivery that makes the tune hit harder still, as if, just when you thought the conversation had its end in sight, an old friend finally confessed what they’d really been going through. That emotional generosity, mixed with tastefully provocative production, makes “Who Was I?” its staying power.
The track arrives as the latest song to be lifted from Parsons’ forthcoming EP, following on from a string of recent singles (which have already garnered him multiple entries into the Top 15 of the UK iTunes Country chart and a placing at #50 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales). Each time out, Parsons makes the case ever more strongly that he is one of Americana’s most introspective voices, finding a way to convey his vulnerability alongside his resilience.
Ultimately, “Who Was I?” is a reflection for listeners. It’s the one that reminds us all who we were, and we necessarily have to define who we’ve become. Instead, those previous chapters are what we build upon for growth, insight, and truth.
