New York-based singer/songwriter Jack Manley has released his new single, “Damn Girl.”
A mellow, gloomy-tinged track, “Damn Girl” was written during a stint in rehab and takes inspiration from the fleeting nature of trauma bonding with another person, and the aching, needy nature of looking for temporary love.
Jack Manley shared: “‘Damn Girl" was written in the haze of hospital lockdowns, watching broken people try to comfort each other with their bodies and delusion. Call it an ode to rehab romance.”
Produced and engineered by Shubnam Mondal (Clairo, Alex G), “Damn Girl” sees Manley sing a repeated mantra “I want to feel your lips on mine/yes I wanna your hips on mine/I wanna feel your lips on mine/it’s almost summertime” to a pronounced, brooding effect. This is a song that is steeped in hurt and pain, from an artist who has been very upfront and open about the difficult times he’s been through. The song’s moody shoegaze textures are finished up with a wailing, treble-boosted guitar solo towards the end, punctuating the gloomy atmosphere with its effective volume.
“Damn Girl” is the second single from Manley’s upcoming album Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, which is a self-penned tale of his own survival and its aftermath, inspired by his own model overdoses and the death of his father.
