Selkie’s “Hours” is a deeply emotional sonic journey

Meet Selkie, an electronic dream-folk project hailing from Scotland and now based in Kyoto, performing across Japan.

Selkie just dropped her new single, “Hours,” which blends layered vocals, textured atmospheres, and an ethereal, floating vibe that’s hard not to get lost in.

With vocals reminiscent of Aurora and Björk, Selkie does a wonderful job of captivating listeners with her unique voice that truly makes the sound her own.

The production lets Selkie’s top-line melody and vocals soar, while experimental elements blend warm guitar tones with innovative sonic textures and subtle drum and bass beats fluttering beneath the surface, creating a richly complex piece.

On the meaning behind the song, Selkie explains: “‘Hours’ traces how distance reshapes connection—how presence can ripple across time and space like light through water. I began writing it at the start of something tender that soon became long-distance. As the world grew quieter during lockdown, the song shifted—from one connection to many, from one absence to a wider ache.”

Deeply emotional and poetic, “Hours” is meant to be felt rather than simply heard. It’s a beautifully textured song that’s so unique, it’s hard to put into words how it leaves you feeling afterward.
