Carla Patullo’s "Nomadica" turns grief into a dreamlike journey of healing and connection

Carla Patullo’s new record, "Nomadica," is a spiritual journey through memory, loss, and the unsaid heartstrings that bind us. Across nine songs in under 35 minutes, this work feels like a trip into a dreamscape where grief and healing blur together, a place that encourages her listeners to accompany her to as she searches out closure in the wake of her mother’s sudden death.

At its heart, "Nomadica" is Patullo’s effort to commune with what was left unsaid to build a bridge between absence and acceptance. The sound of the music inhabits that fine line where grieving gains meaning, where recollection haunts but also sustains. Each song seems like another page torn from a journal kept in both shadow and light. The eponymous title song, “Nomadica,” stands out as a central heartbeat of the album. Atmospheric and hauntingly lovely, it conveys the feel of walking through the badlands of the grieving heart, but still throwing off occasional flashes of tenderness and closeness. It is both ethereal and grounding, drawing listeners into Patullo’s world while provoking thoughts about their own.

Another standout, “Our Love Is,” crams love and longing into something tender and eternal. It’s the sound of a whispered secret across the multiverse, a song that hurts and consoles at the same time. It’s the sense of vulnerability in Patullo’s vocal that makes this track so universal, representing the quiet strength of love’s endurance beyond time and space. Over the course of its 34 minutes, the album unfurls like a conversation between past and present Carla and her mother, absence and presence, silence and song. In place of an ending, Nomadica reads like a hug in honor of the myriad ways love persists, and will persist even after we close a chapter.

Ultimately, "Nomadica" is an empathy for anyone dealing with loss or in need of healing. Carla Patullo channels personal grief into a collective space for healing, where we’re reminded that memory can exist not just in what we hold onto but also in what continues to hold us up. With "Nomadica," Patullo has fashioned a cinematic and deeply human work of art. This album should resonate with anybody who has felt the sting of grief, yet also with anyone who believes in the transcendent power of connection.
