MARISOL aka Eva Gutowski is a prolific creative. As a world renowned fashion creator, popular DJ and producer, the multidimensional and fierce artist is captivating audiences across the globe. Now she has unleashed a new irresistible single. Called "gimme some time", the sun-drenched dance pop banger is filled with captivating vocals, driving beats and colorful synths. The track is striking and fun with shimmery sonics and an upbeat delivery. "gimme some time" is a taste off of her forthcoming highly anticipated album OUCH.
We chat with MARISOL all about her new music, love of travel, fashion and more. The result is a fun and inspiring read!
Congrats on your new single “gimme some time”, can you tell us more about what the single is about thematically?
Thank you!! “gimme some time” could be considered one of the “happier” songs on the OUCH album, because it’s one of the only songs made in a major key. It’s quite airy and feels a bit nostalgic. In reality, “gimme some time” is about capturing that yearning feeling of hoping it all works out with someone or something, but deep down, knowing you can never predict the future. It’s a record that I hope captures a (kind of shitty) feeling, but makes it beautiful and justified to romanticize.
If you can describe the sound of “gimme some time” in three words, what would they be and why?
Nostalgic, experimental, delusional. I say this because I can’t really pin down what genre it would fit in, but I absolutely know the lyrics take me back to being 18 with my on again-off again boyfriend and being too naive to know I had the option to walk away, but also kind of wanting to believe we were “soul mates.” Crying and romanticizing drama, and that ever-so-common limbo period of “give me space to process this fight” was a weekly occurrence at times, lol.
You produce and engineer your own DJ sets, what’s your creative process like in the studio?
Yes! I’m alone most of the time in the studio. And sometimes “the studio” is an economy airplane seat, the floor of my living room… my couch, haha. It’s never the same process. Sometimes I’ll start with a drum pattern or a bass, but it really doesn't matter. For me, good songs can’t be forced – they really just happen. I can spend five days on a song and then look back on it and decide it sucks, and then I can spend one hour and really find a flow and end up with something that I think is really special! Sometimes I'll send demos around to friends if I’m stuck on something, but I usually prefer to show the final product.
What can listeners expect from your upcoming album OUCH?
OUCH dances around many different genres of electronic music. It’s dark, energetic, and cinematic. I really think it takes you to a world of its own, which I can only describe as raving in a forest during blue hour, when the sun is just beginning to rise.
Besides being a prolific DJ, you are also a talented fashion creator. How would you describe your sense of style?
Really, I love to play with and appreciate nearly all “styles”. Every time that I get dressed, I decide what version of “Eva” I want to be. You might see me on the street on Monday morning wearing sneakers and a tennis skirt and be like “Eva’s so sporty,” and then see me later that night in some archive Comme Des Garcons jacket and lace up leather boots, and you’re like “what the fuck is going on,” haha. I mostly love collecting comfortable vintage clothes that you can’t tell are comfortable. You might see me in six inch platforms but trust me, I wouldn't wear them if I couldn’t walk a mile in them! I collect a lot of vintage Issey Miyake, Comme Des, Cavalli, Vivienne Westwood, etc. Those are staple brands in my closet.
You are an avid traveler, tell us one of your favorite destinations and why?
You HAVE to go to Iceland and rent a car and just drive. I don’t think there's anywhere else in the world that clears my mind as much as 72 hours in Iceland.
What’s a dream collaboration you haven’t done yet, either in fashion or music?
I would die to work with Hermes in a unique way that they maybe haven’t done before. I think a lot of young people are appreciating Hermes in a new perspective, and I’d love to capture that. There are so many musical collaborations I’d love to do. One of them is this artist Eyedress. Their music reminds me of being young in California and I think it would be cool to merge that sound with electronic music.
If you could only pack one outfit and one playlist for your next adventure, what would they be?
One outfit would definitely be my vintage men’s leather shorts from Comme Des Garcons, an asymmetrical white button up shirt, some Fidan Novruzova boots and a random dad hat. One playlist would be my “17 AND THE WORLD IS ENDING” playlist on Spotify, because it has some of my favorite songs to romanticize life in it!
What's next?
I’m so excited to get OUCH out and see sonically where I want to go next. I’d always dreamed of finishing an album and now that I actually did it, it’s nice to just sit back and be proud of myself for a second. We don’t do that enough! And hopefully in that process, I’ll find where the next one takes me.
