Verna Margaret's "Fair Weather Wife" EP is an ode to love and discovery

Country singer Verna Margaret returns with her sophomore EP, "Fair Weather Wife," a brave and emotionally dense collection that manages to capture the beauty and drama of human connection in just three songs. The project lasts under 13 minutes, and its impact is long-lasting.

On the bittersweet single "White Shutters, Red Door," Margaret settles into the act of gracefully letting go. It's a goodbye and an act of self-tribute in signature Marling style, combining sharp lyrics and warm, soulful instrumentation. She follows it up with "Paper Cut," a dryly comic meditation on temptation and self-absorption, and proof she can turn humor into wrapped in heartache.

The EP closes with "Lookin Back," its sole previously unheard cut, which arrives as a brash anthem for the independent and self-assured. In place of love as possession, it ridicules love as possession, subordinates love to liberation, and overvalues love as reflection. It is a fitting resolution to an arc that begins with goodbye and ends in hard-won clarity.

Hailing from her hometown of Virginia Beach and based in Los Angeles, Margaret showcases the classic storytelling of John Prine and Emmylou Harris, while layering in experimental textures reminiscent of Fiona Apple and St. Vincent. "Fair Weather Wife" continues that lineage, mixing sharp, lyrical insight with the raw intimacy of soul.

"Fair Weather Wife" resonates with personal significance and serves as a poignant reminder that Margaret's greatest gift is transforming fleeting moments into timeless tunes. With "Fair Weather Wife," Verna Margaret establishes herself as one of country's freshest new voices, wry, wise, and entirely hers.
