Japan’s underground shook to its core as UK bass heavyweights Sota and Darkzy delivered back-to-back nights of blistering energy at Circus Osaka and Circus Tokyo, courtesy of UK label and events powerhouse CruCast. Fueled by high-impact basslines, genre-defying sets, and an immersive 360 experience, both shows marked a seismic moment for drum and bass in Japan’s expanding scene.
Darkzy, the Nottingham-born tastemaker and Grottingham label boss, brought the weight of UK bassline and dubstep with a signature twist. Having made waves since 2016 with standout anthems like “Party All The Time” and “Get Mad,” his Japan sets leaned into heavier, more experimental terrain. Razor-sharp drops and sub-rattling low ends carved out a soundscape that felt both nostalgic and future-facing.
Then came Sota, who took full command of the decks with his visceral blend of rock-influenced drum and bass. Recently named BBC Radio 1’s Future Star of Dance 2025, the rising producer continues to dominate global stages—from Europe to Australia and New Zealand. His Japan performances, highlighting tracks like “Wait For Me” and “Pray For Me,” fused emotional melodies with adrenaline-pumping rhythm, showing why his fanbase is expanding at light speed. His latest CruCast release, “Do You Feel It Now,” marked a shift, evident in a set that balanced catharsis and chaos in equal measure.
CruCast’s signature production and grassroots connection to the scene brought the entire experience together, bridging cultures and pushing drum and bass further into Japan’s thriving club circuit.
