Packaging’s “Always Calling”is a psychedelic indie journey worth taking

Meet indie band Packaging. While their name might seem like a cynical nod to the music industry’s mindset, the music created by duo Daniel Lyon (Spirit Award) and Daniel “Connor” Birch (Flaural) is anything but cynical.

Instead, the duo crafts tracks that are sonically compelling and immersive, blending elements of krautrock chug, psychedelic swirl, electronic grandeur, and tuneful accessibility—with a pinch of bristling self-awareness sprinkled on top.

Their newest release, “Always Calling,” is an indie-psychedelic journey that, at 3 minutes and 31 seconds, fully immerses you. The track features reverbed vocals, swirling psychedelic melodic pads, and poetic lyrics that make you feel like you’ve been lost in Packaging’s universe for its entire duration.

From the very first note, bright psychedelic synth commands your attention, while upbeat drums soon enter, paving the way for cryptic lyrics and classic rock-tinged vocals to creep in.

What makes them exciting is how they’ve built a rich world within a single song, bending genres to their will and creating something perfectly tailored for the indie listener.

Overall, “Always Calling” is a stunning single with an effortless flow from start to finish—making you feel pretty cool for discovering the band.
