In a music world where sameness is the rule, some song rise through the static and “Fallen Angel” by Hidden Axis and WISNER is one of them. Premiering on roster, “When You Smile” is the first offering from the newly minted Neon Owl Records.
“Fallen Angel” is a precision tune, written with craft but lifted from the heart. It’s an adventure in melody, a ride in its ethereal production and a voice that nails you into your soul. Hidden Axis, whose IRL name is Julie, first appeared in the spotlight as part of Neon Owl’s Open Door Sessions (ODS), a virtual safehouse for newcomers during the pandemic. The rise has been fast and well-deserved, as she has gone on to release on Wave Music’s Paradise, Remix for HALIENE on Ophelia Records, and tour with Elephante. Now, with “Fallen Angel,” she has claimed her full power.
The track is epic action in song form, brought to life through WISNER’s raw, soaring vocals and Hidden Axis’ layered, emotive production, unfurling like a narrative on a silver screen. It’s haunting, but hopeful. Soft, yet commanding. There’s a nakedness that remains long after the last drop.
Neon Owl founder Elaine Huang had a vision years in the making: to create a record label devoted to pushing out true artistry and soul. And with “Fallen Angel,” that vision comes to stunning fruition. “Julie is going to headline EDC one day,” Elaine declared confidently after their first-ever virtual encounter. This album plays like a dream — starting from its opening notes, that forecast of destiny seems likelier and likelier with each beat of this release.
It’s more than simply a label debut. It’s a movement, a new era of artist discovery in the dance music world. If “Fallen Angel” is anything to go by, Neon Owl Records is not playing it safe. They’re here to restore a little bit of the rasp and earthiness and rough lustre that got us to fall in love with music in the first place.
