Los Angeles rock outfit Jane Doe has never been one to play by the rules, and their latest offering "The Menu" continues their rebellious tradition. The new visual, directed by Ava Taulere, arrives as a searing statement piece from their sophomore full-length, Found.
"The Menu" opens with an arresting shot of front woman Izzy, her steady gaze a stark contrast to the blistering guitar work that kicks off the track. What follows is a masterclass in artistic symbolism, as the viewer is pulled to watch a literal and metaphorical transformation unfold. Izzy systematically dismantles conventional beauty standards, culminating in a cathartic head-shaving sequence that perfectly mirrors the song's themes of reclamation and renewal. "I took back my agency and started a new chapter," Izzy shares about the powerful moment. As the track builds, its gripping bassline, kinetic drums, and soul-shaking vocals roar into view, leaving no emotional stone unturned.
As part of this pivotal moment for Jane Doe, we caught up with Izzy to discuss "The Menu," the evolution of the band, and what lies ahead in an exclusive interview.
Congrats on your new music video for "The Menu". It's awesome! Can you tell our readers more about the song, and what it represents for you?
Thank you!! The song is a salty commentary about how women are often treated in society. I was bullied growing up – mostly for the way I looked. So, self-confidence has been tough for me. Even the bridge lyrics are a speedy compilation of misogynistic comments and experiences I’ve endured, layered on top of each other to creating a sense of utter havoc. Music and writing give me the strength to stand my ground on a host of levels.
When and where did you write the song? Does time and place influence you and your writing process?
The music and lyrics were written when we were based in Canada and then the song was polished when the band reestablished itself in the U.S. during the pandemic. I don’t know if place necessarily influences the writing process – but certainly state of mind. We’re always writing so – dependent on how we’re feeling that day – we never know what’s gonna come out.
The visuals are explosive and emotionally charged. How involved were you in shaping the creative direction of the video?
The goal was to juxtapose calm with chaos – which is basically how life often feels. The idea to shave my head was mine. The director, Ava Taulere, is one of my oldest, closest friends. She co-directed two of our other videos and I think we have a sort of short-hand. She took the concept and the vibe the band wanted and ran with it. Our incredible DP Xavier Henselmann who also worked on our last two videos knows how to lean in to a bold, stripped-down look and our editor Keeley Davis nailed the energy build. We love to collaborate and our music video sets are always a blast because of that.
Watching you cut your hair off and shave your head on-camera was bold and powerful. What sparked the idea? How did it make you feel?
I’d shaved my head once before, and it was very freeing the first time around. I went through the saddest and hardest year of my life, filled with loss and grief – so the idea of shaving my head again was very appealing… to start a new chapter. And why not do that in a music video?
Tell me more about the band's musical influences. What sparks your passion for music?
We all grew up with music as an enormous part of our lives. We’re inspired by so many artists. We’re heavily influenced by classic rock and grunge – Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam. We’re also big fans of King’s X. We worship at the altar of Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson. We want to carry on the torch of rock-and-roll but with our own unique style.
What does the name 'Jane Doe' represent for the band?
We like the idea of representing “the unseen.” So many people feel like they don’t fit in anywhere – whether they’ve been told that or they just feel like that on the inside. Everyone in the band has felt like that at one time or another, so our goal is to connect with people in that way.
Any upcoming plans for shows?
Yes! We have some super exciting news coming down the pipeline soon – another tour may be on the horizon!
Give me three fun adjectives that describe the band.
Grungy, authentic, face-melting.
Finally, what's next for Jane Doe?
We’re back in the studio working on new music, so we’re hoping to have something out by the end of the year! We enjoy making music videos, so I’m sure there will be more of those. Follow us on social media for all the updates and entertaining content!
