MXGPU embrace speed, instinct, and emotional vulnerability on new single “find u” [Interview]

Lisbon-based duo MXGPU — made up of Moullinex and GPU Panic — lean into emotion, speed, and instinct on their new single “find u,” out today via Discotexas. Blending liquid drum & bass with crisp synths and heartfelt vocals, the track is a bold new shift in sound ahead of their debut album Sudden Light, arriving September 26.

“‘find u’ was always an outlier while writing Sudden Light,” they explain. “It never quite fit in. We knew it had two possible fates: end up in the bin, or take the spotlight… That gave us the confidence to write ‘find u,’ our wild card. We wear it proudly.”

The pair have collaborated since 2017, but say MXGPU only took full form this year. “It happened very naturally, as the project took more and more space and still felt right.” Working together brought creative breakthroughs for both: “Gui’s vocals are an emotional anchor… a source of humanity in the music,” says Moullinex, while GPU Panic calls Moullinex “the best partner possible” and praises his ability to “push me into the right vibe and help me deliver the kind of performance the track deserves.”

“find u” emerged late in the album process, but felt like a turning point. “We’ve always loved fast-paced music,” says Moullinex, who cites an early remix of GPU Panic’s “Glimpse of You” as the spark. “Especially House music at 120 bpm feels too… ‘safe’ right now.” GPU Panic adds, “‘find u’ was in the queue right up until the end… it always felt like it was pointing toward something new — a different direction for us.”

That desire to take risks carries into their live show, which is performed “in the round,” with no sound engineer and no barriers between them and the crowd. “Every show feels like walking on a tightrope,” they say. “It feels really vulnerable, but sooooo powerful and rewarding.” The format, they add, “reclaims a sense of connection we feel while audience members and wanted to reclaim as performers too.”

Their creative approach embraces playfulness and spontaneity. Moullinex once recorded a voice memo at Abbey Road “just to have ‘Recorded at Abbey Road Studios’ in the record’s liner notes.” GPU Panic sampled the metallic lid of an IKEA lamp after bumping into it repeatedly — “It kind of felt like a broken bell.”

And despite their high-concept visuals and analog-heavy gear setup, the duo are unafraid of sentimentality. “I cry a lot in movies (and concerts!!), and I’m getting worse with age,” says Moullinex. “Please don’t play the Pixar movie ‘Up’.” GPU Panic singles out The Whale as “a very moving and emotional one.”

Looking ahead, MXGPU will continue their summer tour across Portugal, followed by their first-ever U.S. shows in October. When asked about dream performances, they don’t hesitate: “Our 360 at Coachella, Sahara Stage. And in the middle of Tejo river, on a platform held by a crane, in our home city of Lisbon.”

“find u” is out now. MXGPU’s debut album Sudden Light arrives September 26 via Discotexas.
