EXCLUSIVE: Amy Jay looks inward with single and album announcement

Indie alt-folk artist Amy Jay has announced a new album and released a new song to boot, “Can’t Go Back.”

Released Friday, the song marks her first solo release of the year and is the first taste of the New York-based singer/songwriter’s first album in three years, Mnemonics.

Impactful drums and bass form the backbone of the instrumentation, which is soon joined by light horns that add flavor. This sparsity in the music puts focus on Jay’s voice, which is well controlled and subdued in its delivery. The filter effect placed in the mix gives a further sense of distance between Jay and the person she is singing about.

Speaking of which, Jay sings about an old relationship, vividly remembering how they broke up. While the pain, love and regret still linger, she knows neither of them can do anything to change what happened between them. Jay wisely understates the emotion, avoiding melodrama.

Mnemonics is set to release Nov. 7 as her first full-length release with Mother West Records. “Can’t Go Back” reads as a sign that it will be chock-full of therapeutic tracks, both for Jay and for listeners.
