Nigerian rap phenom and rising hip-hop artist BIQD gets the feelings percolating with his newest single, “This Love Is On Fire,” a moody, hypnotic, and heartbreak-heavy anthem that burns right through them.
The production, courtesy of the endlessly inventive Skilla, bubbles with stacked intensity from the very first note, mixing moody soul samples with ambient textures and crisp beats. It’s a sonic slow-burn, as seductive as it is sorrowful and reflecting the emotional wreckage left when love burns too hot, even while it seduces. The production is atmospheric but earthy, and there’s an arresting sample that sounds as if it’s echoing down the walls of a lonely apartment at 2 a.m.
Born Paul Chibuike Chukwukere, BIQD dives headfirst into the lyrical firestorm unabashedly. His is a voice that is accurate, aching, poetic, painting vivid pictures of late-night yearning, romantic confusion, and the push-and-pull of desire that won’t go gently into that good night. “This Love Is On Fire” is the temperature of every bar he spits.
What’s magnetic about BIQD’s performance is his capability to remain emotionally gripping even while bending his technical control. It’s introspective rap at its most appealing, toeing the line between depth and commercial appeal. Drawing from artists as diverse as Central Cee, Post Malone, and Drake, to the early Nigerian heroes Psquare and Westlife, BIQD is defining a style that’s both universal and deeply intimate.
This release follows BIQD’s debut “D’s Genesis” in the fall of 2018 and the growth of the buzz surrounding his breakout single “BigD”, only proving further how momentum is building up for BIQD. He may have arrived on the scene in 2024, but the assurance and precision of his sound say plenty that he’s training them.
