Pretty Little Saturday arrives with dreamy debut “Long Overdue”

Asheville artist finally took center stage in her own story, known beyond the musical confines of time and space as Pretty Little Saturday. Her debut single, “Long Overdue,” is as the headline implies, this moment has been a long time in the making.

“Long Overdue” is the title song from her upcoming album, and it breathes out gently like a held-in sigh. With introspective lyrics and a glistening soundscape that glows like golden hour light, Knupp marries indie pop sensitivity with soft electronic textures and sun-soaked country-pop shimmer. There’s a beautiful contradiction here: at once earthbound and ethereal, intimate yet widescreen. The production is a layered, lush affair, dreamy guitars swirling in and out of ambient synths, and all held in place by Knupp’s soft, airy vocals that reads as much diary entry as melody.

Her voice seizes attention, easily. It’s evident she’s listened deeply before deciding to speak. There is a quiet self-assurance in that. “Long Overdue” conjures the emotional precision of Kacey Musgraves, the sonic grandeur of MUNA, and the earnest introspection of Maggie Rogers. But make no mistake “Pretty Little Saturday” isn’t anyone’s heir apparent. She’s blazing her own trail, and this track is just the first footfall. The song articulates a private, soul-stirring transformation, from telling other people’s stories to, at last, telling her own. Partially inspired by Musgraves’ Deeper Well, Knupp digs through layers of observation to something raw, personal and refreshingly honest.

For a debut, “Long Overdue” doesn’t sound like a beginning but an arrival. Pretty Little Saturday has found that voice, and it’s worth listening to. It’s her corny what, them stars don’t deceive me? and with this first offering, she reminds us that timing isn’t everything, truth is. And this song, no doubt, feels real.
