Agatchu’s new single “Chance” is the sweetest whisper in the wind, intimate, deliberate, and impossible to ignore. Preparing his sophomore EP, which is expected to arrive this summer through established French indie label Play Two, the French Angolan artist and producer delivers on “Chance,” a mood-setter and a mission statement in one.
Recorded between Lisbon and Paris, “Chance” is the type of track that feels lived in a twilight slowly descending upon cobblestone streets. It’s a subtle nod to Agatchu’s Afro-Lusophone heritage, with the rhythm and soul of Angola gently blended with the soft brushstrokes of Brazilian bossa nova. The result is rich yet unforced, cinematic, and deeply personal.
“Chance” is driven by a late-night, guitar-loop spartan, spellbinding track that serves as a canvas for subtle percussion, ambient textures, and an elusive frame of harmonies. Each ingredient is presented in a delicate pleat, and the process is not rushed. Agatchu’s vocals are quiet but full-bodied, the kind that doesn’t need to raise its voice to be heard. It’s a performance that breathes, one that affords listeners the space to feel rather than only to hear.
“Chance” refuses to bludgeon you with that stuff and so it sucks you in little by little, almost without your noticing. It’s a confident quietness, the voice of a songwriter who knows exactly who he is and where he’s from, and is happy for you to sit next to him in that place for a few minutes.
As a lead single, “Chance” establishes a pretty measured tone for what we can expect from Agatchu’s next chapter. If this track is any indication, his forthcoming EP won’t be only something to hear, it will be something to live inside.
