Indie pop band The Aces have announced a new album, and a new single to boot, “You Got Me.”
Released Friday, this song is the latest taste of Gold Star Baby, the Utah quartet’s fourth studio album. The album set to include their singles, “The Magic” and “Jealous.”
The lyrics illustrate the feeling of falling in love with someone. This is fully in line with an Interview quote used in a press release the band put out alongside the album announcement, that the band “makes music about girls, for girls, and for girls who like girls.”
While the band previously covered this subject on “New Emotion” off their sophomore album, here, they sound more self-assured about their intentions, as evidenced by Cristal Ramirez’s vocals. But this may be at odds with their partner’s, who may believe this is just a casual fling.
The music sounds low key in volume, but full of substance underneath. The synth line and the guitar riff by Katie Henderson differ greatly and provide great contrast. McKenna Petty’s bass bops unbelievably, and Alisa Ramirez’s drumming hits just the right way.
The band’s press release seemingly indicates Gold Star Baby will be a loose concept record, which goes against the grain of their previous three albums. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how “You Got Me” fits into the story the Aces intend to tell once the full album releases Aug. 15.
