Seb Adams taps Into raw emotion and pixelated memories on “Bittersweet Nostalgia”

Seb Adams is back, and this time it's personal. His sophomore album, "Bittersweet Nostalgia," by the ascendant alt-rock singer-songwriter, throws off the confidence-robbing fickleness of his 2022 debut, Between Awake & Fast Asleep, and reasserts his voice with a project that's as emotionally powerful and sonically robust as they come.

Right from the opening track, it's evident that "Bittersweet Nostalgia" is a reinvention. Mixing the snarl of '90s pop punk with the glossy sheen of modern alt-rock, Seb drops an album that boasts catchy choruses and vulnerability without forfeiting any of its bite. The production, done by Adams himself, is driven with purpose. The guitars crunch, the drums pummel, and yet the vulnerability in his lyrics cushions the sound just enough in the right places.

"Bittersweet Nostalgia" stands out because of its transparency. The record explores mental health, identity, and growing up online, all universal ideas refracted through Seb's distinctive prism of internet culture, pixelated memories, and a ceaseless quest for meaning. You can practically see the haunting CRT screen shining through the songs.

It was the power of the spontaneous that was the game-changer: "I'm away on a trip with my girlfriend, and I get out my acoustic guitar and have written this song 'Long Gone,'" Seb says. "I felt at that moment that I needed to be making music that excited me again." That recognition ripples through the album, and every song seems like a step back toward purpose, a memory jog of why making music should matter in the first place.

Highlight moments intersperse the rawness of early-2000s emo with undeniably slick hooks of indie-radio favorites." There's a warmth in the chaos, a kind of quiet hope that manages to sneak in between the distortion and wistful lyrics. "Bittersweet Nostalgia" reclaims its place for anyone who has ever felt lost growing up in a digital world, this album is their friend.
