Boston indie rock band Future Teens are back with a vengeance and a new single, “Harm Production.”
Released Friday, the new song marks the band’s first release in almost a full year since “Double Down” came out last June, as well as their first single since the departure of bassist Maya Mortman.
The sound of “Harm Production” is the most hardcore the band has sounded in a while, if not ever. The guitar work from Daniel Rudin and frontman Amy Hoffman applies classic-sounding riffs to supplement cymbal-heavy percussion by Colby Blauvelt.
Hoffman also takes over bass duties from Mortman, and both the bass and vocals carry more grit than usual, adding weight to the lyrical content. The narrator resents their current situation and is aware that they are an addict, but cannot bring themselves to accept or seek help.
As the chorus repeats towards the climax, the band begins to drown out Hoffman’s increasingly frantic voice, until he screams out the final line, “I want to fist fight.” Mixing engineer Andy Tyler Clarke and mastering engineer Ed Brooks both deserve credit for helping paint that portrait of someone gasping for air before they sink.
The cover art for “Harm Production” retains the motif of Future Teens’ two 2024 singles, suggesting a larger body of work is still on the way. Their catalog so far has made an expectation that whatever the band produces next can only be great.
