Indie rock group The Happy Fits have dropped yet another new single, “Cruel Power.”
The song’s release on Thursday coincided with the announcement of their fourth studio album, Lovesick. Alongside “Cruel Power,” the album will contain 14 other tracks, including their previous single “Everything You Do.”
Musically, “Cruel Power” continues the band’s fun streak fueled by engrossing guitars, courtesy of Nico Rose and Raina Mullen, and punchy drumming from Luke Davis.
Calvin Langman’s vocals go from playful to emotive without skipping a beat, while Rose and Mullen’s vocals in the bridge put an extra pinch of allure. There’s even some acoustic guitar and cello playing from Langman, just for good measure.
The lyrics describe someone so in love that they’re completely fine with being taken for granted. It takes the phrase, “better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all,” to a whole new level.
“Cruel Power” also received a dance-centric music video starring dancer and choreographer Lucy Vallely. Directed by Langman, Vallely and MJ Ricciardi, the video was filmed in one take, according to a press release. It shows Vallely dancing with the band members, flirting with Langman in particular.
The Happy Fits are set to go on tour this fall to promote Lovesick, which releases Sept. 19. “Cruel Power” suggests the record will be characterized by consuming feelings of passion and will catch listeners in its orbit.
