Australian-born, LA-based alt-pop artist ILUKA has released her new single, “California Boys.”
ILUKA arrived with a smash last year and kept the momentum going earlier this year with the release of “Girl On The Run” and its gorgeous, heatstroke-inducing music video in April.
The single followed “Woman Gone Mad,” her grief-stricken response to the LA fires that tore through her neighborhood, capturing both the pain and the resilience needed to navigate recent world events.
Teased as a ‘smirking takedown’ of the beautiful-faced “nice guy” womanisers of Los Angeles, ILUKA’s “California Boys” skewers them with biting lyrics: you’re so punk rock, heavy metal / soft like a flower petal / ooh you think you’re such a dream. It’s her ode to every emotionally unavailable, commitment-phobic, image-obsessed guy who ghosts without guilt—and she’s had enough.
The video makes her point even sharper, as ILUKA parades through LA in thrifted outfits of her own styling, with endless blonde tresses and severe red lipstick, singing straight to one of the very vapid pretty boys she’s done with—her signature raspy tone dripping with disdain.
Backed by steel guitars and a country-style twang, “California Boys” is the “fuck you” that fuckboys have long had coming.
