Indie pop punk band BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT are back with a new single, “ON YOUR LIPS.”
The song marks the beginning of a busy year for the trio, who are scheduled for Warped Tour and the Idobi Radio Summer School Tour. “ON YOUR LIPS” is their latest release under Verswire, a label founded in a collaboration between Mark Hoppus of blink-182 and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy.
“ON YOUR LIPS” carries those influences like many of the band’s previous hits, but also makes a sonic step up. While Bardo Novotny’s guitar and Brent Burdett’s bass remain prominent fixtures, electronic elements are also interspersed throughout, often evoking the sounds of arcade machines. The drumming is also quite forceful and rhythmic.
Colie Hutzler’s wailing takes on a somewhat cold tone, perhaps to mask the extent of his feelings, to sing lyrics about feeling so strongly for someone that you would be willing to put up with ridiculous requests from them. Talk about taking the good with the bad!
The song’s release on Friday coincided with the release of its music video, produced by Prolific Friends.
The video takes place in a single bedroom, with a reddish tint over the footage. Said footage includes scenes of a girl putting on earphones to listen to the song alone on a Walkman, intercut with scenes of the band performing the song. The band doesn’t interact with the girl until the ending, where Hutzler suddenly appears next to the girl as she admires a butterfly in a jar. The video ends with them holding up the jar together.
While details of BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT’s future output are being kept under wraps — the band’s Instagram page has been reduced to its two latest posts — a press statement promises a “bold new chapter” for the band. “ON YOUR LIPS” demonstrates that it is one to look forward to.
