The seminal title track from the Fayetteville singer's latest project touches on family upbringing and the generational curse that comes with work.
Chlothegod has been on a roll. Her album I Feel Different Every Day tackled abrasive songwriting elements through her incorporation of relaxed yet passionate songwriting and unconventional soul singing, resulting in a listen that felt very real. Chlo followed this with an extended version of the EP that continued touching on topics such as identity, nationality, and mental health issues, but now the singer is back with a new video to further the exploration.
The title track from Chlo's album was a strong introduction to the singer's brand of off-kilter melodies with remarkably honest subject matters, and it's chlo's execution of song structure that gives each sung line an extra layer of oomph and touch of reality. But something's different here. Something tantalizing in the sound in chlo's voice during the bridge that puts her lump in the back of your throat. Something incredibly uncomfortable to speak about.
"I Feel Different Every Day" explores the singer's upbringing and personal relationship with the military and how this relationship with a major imperial power has always brought a sense of financial security to her homelife while simultaneously altering it for the worse. The video does the song justice by hammering on those sentiments of this familial struggle through vibrant means of imagery, one including the singer posing in front of a giant American flag, sporting a sign written "NO MORE WAR."
The line in the first verse sets the stage for the ride: "My daddy tightened up and // Made a deal with the government // Like his father did before him // Just like his dad did the same // My baby sister's so lucky // So am I 'cause we shared a name // My little brother's just like me //Rather die than feel ashamed."
A perfect representation of the type of lyricism chlothegod brings to the table.
