Soapman sparks chaos and charm in explosive alt-rock anthem “Y. L. T. Y.”

Already making a name for themselves in the wonderful world of alt-pop rock, Soapman has just released their third single, “Y. L. T. Y.” It is the kind of song that drags you by the collar and demands your attention. Running less than three minutes, “Y. L. T. Y.” is a jolting bolt to the brain, a jumble that plays like the realization of a Tilt-A-Whirl gone completely haywire (in the best way). It’s fast, it’s reckless, and it’s gloriously out of control. The song combines jarring guitar strokes with unpredictable tempo changes and a melodic bounce that is both hyperactive and hypnotic.

What makes “Y. L. T. Y.” so notable is how unafraid it is to be weird. Soapman pushes a stream-of-consciousness lyric style to its extreme, a frenzied spewing of thoughts that sounds gleefully unburdening and gives the song an honest, unpolished edge. A delicious tension is at work here as introspective musings rub up against exuberant, pop-glossed instrumentation that manages to be fastidiously crafted and off-the-cuff.

That refusal to play it safe makes Soapman so exciting to follow. They evolved with each release, teasing out anticipation just enough to keep us curious, which “Y. L. T. Y.” doesn’t shortchange. This track kicks the door in and declares that Soapman is here to shake up cages and rewrite the alt-rock rulebook. “Y. L. T. Y.” is a statement. It’s Soapman at his least filtered, most audacious, and most entertaining. If this is what the precursor to Baby Giants sounds like, hang on to your hats. Something is in the works.
