pure xtc captures the haunting beauty of letting go in new single “Drive”

Pure XTC bottles that bittersweet moment with raw precision in a new song, “Drive." Recorded alone in a home studio, this atmospheric track is a gentle unspooling of intimacy filtered through dreamy textures and aching honesty. On its surface, “Drive” rides on a cushion of near-weightless sound. But right under the surface, there swirls a quiet storm of emotion. It’s in the way the vocals quiver with restraint, how each of those lines lands as a hushed confession from the hesitant mouth of someone still making sense of love’s abrupt tilt.

“Drive is about life at the exact moment love slips out of your hand,” according to Hughes, whose creative vehicle is pure xtc. “When the person you couldn’t live without in the world begins to feel like a stranger.” It’s a simple, crippling sentiment, and one that Hughes somehow achieves in sound with incredible subtlety. There’s just the brutal realism of distance settling down to stay, of affection growing strange.

The caveat of “Drive” is a matter of discretion. Instead of filling the space with noise, pure xtc embraces the quiet, the way that cavernous gaps can echo almost as loudly as the verses. The result is a track that makes you feel it. It’s reminiscent of a long post-argument drive, headlights capturing ephemeral glances of what once was. On “Drive,” pure xtc continues to establish its own lane, straddling the divide between dream-pop and introspective indie. It showcases how vulnerability can be as much its own kind of power. There may be little production, but there’s no absence of emotion.
