"BANKRUPT" turns the American dream inside out with soulful introspection on FEM du lit’s debut album, STIGMATA

FEM du lit craft a hypnotic fusion of neo-soul and R&B on their new single, "BANKRUPT," a track between quietly sibilant drums and strings that both tug at the heartstrings and tighten around it but breathes. The fourth single from their debut album, STIGMATA, is a masterclass in soulful storytelling, exposing the disillusionment of pursuing wealth when all you yearn for are the simple joys of life.

With the opening notes of "BANKRUPT," listeners are swept into a groove-heavy soundscape, led by Zora Seboulisa’s supple basslines and Lily M Tahar’s loose, intuitive drum fills that land precisely in the pocket. With FEM du lit’s emotional vocals stationed above the melody, you can hear nods to the likes of Lady Wray and Stevie Wonder timeless but modern, deep soul pulling a key in the era of a make-up sex bop.

And lending an extra layer of magic is Obsvdian (Xiomara Mills-Dupree) on saxophone, weaving an ethereal yet commanding presence that makes the track feel simultaneously meditative and supremely alive. The harmonies swell, the instrumentation breathes, and suddenly.

Behind FEM du lit is Francesca Eluhu, an artist whose Congolese-French heritage and disparate influences coalesce into a sound that resists categorization. A member of Seattle’s psychedelic neo-soul band Day Soul Exquisite, their solo work goes even deeper into the electro-soul space, where searing emotion meets polished artistry.

With "BANKRUPT" turns the American Dream Inside Out with Soulful Introspection on FEM du lit’s Debut Album, STIGMATA. It fits perfectly within STIGMATA, which serves as a bold and deeply personal exploration of queerness within the African diaspora and the ruptures in family relationships that ensue. Told through hauntingly poetic lyricism and hypnotic, psychedelic production, STIGMATA dives fearlessly into themes of identity, love, and the weight of generational trauma.
