Margate, UK-based dream-pop band Tokyo Tea Room first popped up on our radar last year with their surreal bedroom pop single "No Rush." The track served as the lead and title track for their debut LP, a 12-track body of work that builds on their distinct take on bedroom/dream pop sounds and love-themed and introspective concepts.
The plucky guitar-driven "If You Love Her" which explores heartbreak sets the tone with an overwhelming heartfelt tone and moodiness that will continue to take shape throughout the project. On "Nobody's Perfect" the band digs deep into self-exploration and discovery while on "I Know It Hurt You," they lead us into emotional pain and the process of self-healing. Each song feels like a stand-alone story that is distinct from the other so listeners can easily gravitate to the songs that hit home the most.
The band's attempts to tackle the major topics from unrequited love, relationship dynamics, and communication are captured on tracks like the solemn "Tell Me How," and "I'm Just Human." Overall, there is so much to unpack in terms of the emotional aspect and the production aesthetic itself. The choice of mellow, laidback grooves, ethereal lofi-esque musical arrangements, and soft and layered vocal runs help give the project a distinct and cohesive feel that evokes a looming sadness and calm. In essence, listeners follow the band through the ups and downs of their emotional rollercoaster from a first-hand view.
