Malóne talks Club Space residency, WHYNOTUS, and early musical influences [Interview]

Miami’s underground house scene has found its next breakout star in Malóne, the Cuban-born DJ and producer who is making serious waves this year. Not only does he have a residency at the iconic Club Space in Miami, but he's also been headlining at some of the world’s most renowned venues. His hits “Muy Bien” and “Besame” rose to #1 worldwide on Beatport's Afro House segment, on top of “En Su Lugar” racking up over 46 million streams on Spotify.

We had the chance to catch his electrifying B2B set with Miluhska at the Isotropic stage during the III Points Music Festival last weekend, and the set was a true testament to the momentum he’s built this year. Earmilk got to talk with Malóne all about his journey to a residency at Club Space, recent projects, and his upcoming Halloween takeover at Jolene Sound Room.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey from starting out as a DJ to becoming a resident at Club Space?

It has been an incredible journey, filled with many ups and downs. I started off as a super local DJ, basically playing all parties for free just to get an opportunity. Then I became a 'promoter' DJ, getting paid based on tickets sold for the events I was booked at.

More than anything, consistently being present in the Miami scene has been the most important factor. Supporting other artists and their parties, and always being around the community, ultimately led me into the right circles. Along with consistently releasing music and building my artist profile over the years, always representing Miami and pushing my city forward, I eventually got the opportunity to play at Space and their different events across various venues. Delivering strong performances and leaving a good impression was key to being asked to become a resident.

As a Cuban-born artist, how has your heritage played a role in shaping your sound and production?

It’s been hugely impactful. I grew up listening to '80s and '90s salsa, which is one of the best generations and genres of music ever. I also had a heavy influence from The Bee Gees –my mom's favorite band – who were always playing at family parties, car rides, and trips to the baseball park. My uncle was also a DJ in Miami in the '80s, so music has always been part of my life. I learned how to DJ when I was 10 years old.

You recently released “Groove Con Clase” with Cameron Jack — what inspired that track, and what did your creative process look like?

Cameron and I had been wanting to work together for a while. He is one of the most talented producers out there, and I had signed a bunch of his music years ago when I was A&R'ing for some labels.

We started with the groove and percussion, knowing we wanted something for the dancefloor that would get the crowd moving. We stumbled across a few samples from different packs that fit perfectly together. Sending the project back and forth over a couple of months between Ibiza touring and summer holidays in Europe, we were both very happy with the finished result. It's been one of my most supported tracks of the year by DJs in the industry.

Looking ahead to your upcoming Halloween takeover at Jolene Sound Room — what are you most excited about? How did that event come together?

This is our third installment of WHYNOTUS at Jolene. We sold out the first two, so I am excited to be back on such a big night. More importantly, we have a special guest and good friend of mine, Arodes, who is coming off a massive summer of touring Europe and releasing music. It is an honor to host my brand and label showcase in my own city.

You’ve become a staple in Miami’s music scene – how does Miami nightlife culture inspire your music and label?

Miami is the dance music capital of the U.S. Miami Music Week kicks off the entire season for our scene, and it is a key weekend where most DJs are playing and testing their newest IDs for the first time. As a Space resident, I am fortunate to experience so much music and incredible sets at Space and Factory Town, which constantly inspires me. If the music works on the Terrace, it will work anywhere — that’s how I gauge things.

What is your long-term vision for WHYNOTUS, and are there any new artists or releases on the horizon that you’re excited about?

The ultimate goal is to one day have a summer residency in Ibiza for my label and brand party. It has always been about discovering new talent, signing great music from artists around the world, and throwing remarkable parties to showcase them.

I am excited about my upcoming collab with Rony Seikaly, Journey of Sound, which drops on WHYNOTUS on December 6 during Art Basel — it is going to be a big vibe.

We have also got amazing music coming soon from artists like Sabrosura Boys and Gabriel Rojas from LA, Sera de Villalta and Abdon from Spain, and many more of my own tracks in 2025.
