How "Aquamarine" realigns Addison Rae’s path to pop stardom

After the release of her debut single "Obsessed" in 2021, popular TikTok star Addison Rae faced a wave of backlash, with critics overlooking the budding potential in her sound. Her path to musical recognition seemed uncertain — like the hidden beauty within an oyster, yet to be seen. The initial reception cast doubt on her music career’s prospects, yet Rae's artistic vision has since undergone a dramatic shift.

Following the criticism of "Obsessed," a different audience began to connect with her music through scrapped, leaked songs, especially niche fans on Twitter who gravitated to her more experimental pop sound. This gave rise to a new, loyal fanbase within the LGBTQ+ community, distinct from the broader TikTok followers she initially captured in 2019. With this support, Rae found the courage to release her 2023 EP AR—a dazzling collection of earworms and hooks reminiscent of early-2000s pop. Notably, Charli XCX, the avant-garde pop star, served as Rae’s mentor during this period, collaborating with her on the track "2die4," which infused her work with a daring edge.

Rae stayed mostly under the radar until her surprise feature on Charli XCX’s remix of "Von Dutch," the lead single from Charli XCX’s critically acclaimed album BRAT. This marked her first collaboration with a prominent artist and began shifting public perception, signaling her serious commitment to music. Soon after, her summery single "Diet Pepsi" hit the Billboard Hot 100—her first charting song that marked a turning point in her journey.

That brings us to "Aquamarine," a sparkling, dance-driven track that blends sensual, aquatic themes over a sweeping four-on-the-floor beat. With its nostalgic 90s-inspired synths, "Aquamarine" recalls the shimmering sounds of Madonna’s Ray of Light era—particularly the ethereal tones of "Nothing Really Matters" — and Britney Spears' "Breathe on Me" from In the Zone. Rae’s sound feels like sunlight that glitters on the sea's horizon, both refreshing and bold, capturing a rare mix of allure and introspection. In the music video, Rae channels the iconic style and magnetism of the early 2000s, embodying a new role as a fashion icon and performer through mesmerizing choreography and a radiant persona.

Over time, Addison Rae’s evolution from social media star to rising pop artist continues to unfold, revealing new layers with each release. Like an oyster gradually forming its pearl, Rae’s artistry has taken time to reveal its full beauty. Slowly but surely, the world may come to see the luminescence she’s carefully crafted, a pearl emerging in her own time, too bright to be overlooked.
