As the hazy, anthemic wash of guitars and dual vocals surrounds you on the opening title track of this four-track EP, you’re transported into an energetic musical world bristling with everything from The Mary Chain’s 80’s psyche shoegaze to huge stadium-ready rock sounds. The expansive cinematic aura Wings of Desire conjures up is thrilling.
With this new release, the duo of James Taylor and Chloe Little are guarded against the digital dystopia they see threatening Mother Earth, with "Shut and Listen" and the other songs featured here all raging against the automated masses and algorithmic influencers who point us towards a dystopian future. This is a warning against nihilism and ignorance.
Their chiding lyrics and doomsday viewpoint, where the universe and Earth are exacting their own forms of biblical revenge (floods, hurricanes, solar flares etc) don't come across as hectoring though. "Forgive and Forget (Reprise)" features a fast-paced rush of heartfelt love that sweetens the lyrics. The impending doom isn’t lectured, it’s smoothly delivered with chiming melodies, like a syrup for the ears, but to be completely honest all of their tunes possess strong hummable verses and shoutable choruses fit for the adoration of crowds.
